We were stuck in T

enerife our return flight was cancelled all we were given at airport was a handout note (there was no monarch staff there only handling agents) tried to get them on phone line always engaged and if you did get through after a while it cut off; went on Internet and the only flight offered we had to but at a outrageous price £1300 for two, which was six days later the screen was flashing only 5 seats left so we felt we had no choice but to book, we had to rent a apartment for our delay and  all other expenses out of out own pocket, what I would like to know will monarch refund our flight costs home ; by the way when we got on the plane it was half full; I told the stewardess about the 5 seats remaining and we both wrote out a report about it; many thanks

Under EU law you had the

Under EC regulation 261/2004 you had the right of rerouting or reimbursement.

If you chose rerouting ,that is waiting for the airline to get you home somehow, you are entitled to the cost of refreshment and accommodation until the airline sort things out.

If you choose reimbursement then you get the cost as above up to the time that choice is made plus the original cost of the ticket paid to your airline - in this case Monarch.

I do not believe you will be entitled as a matter of law for the additional cost of tickets on which you eventually flew home.

You could of course approach Monarc and explain what happened to try and encourage them to make an ex-gratia payment to you.
