Real names in books?

Hi all - newbie here!

I need a little bit of advice if that's OK. I am looking to start on a book I have been planning for a while. It is a spoof memoir of a fictional 1970's footballer.

Now in order to give the book a feel of realism I was hoping to use the names of real footballers and managers of the time. What is the situation with this? They would be placed in fictional (although very much comedic) situations involving the lead character.

Apologies for the ignorance! Any guidance would be superb.

The easiest way to make sure

The easiest way to make sure you cause no offence and slander no persons living or dead is to get their permission to use their names
