Justice in China

Last week it was reported that a Chinese man who had spent 10 years in prison for murder was released after his victim showed up alive.

Even the Chinese authorities, so well known for their record on human rights, had to release the prisoner. Presumably they could not find any other offence to pin on him.

This echoes the case She Xianglin .In 1994 under torture he confessed to the murder of his wife and was sentenced to 15 years in prison. In 2005 his wife turned up. It emerged she had run away with another man and was totally unaware of the proceedings brought against her husband.

Nie Shubin was not so lucky. In 1995 he was executed for murder yet 10 years later the police had to admit he was innocent.

Rough justice indeed.
