Inter-Professional Forum

Hello Everyone

I am a Consultant Psychiatrist who has been in NHS and private practice for the last 30 years.  During this time I have had the privilege of jointly working with solicitors on  numerous occasions in relation to common 'clients', usually to provide an expert opinion or medico-legal psychiatric reports.

In my experience there can sometimes be limited understanding on the part of both professional groups of the demands, challenges and deadlines of each others working lives, which may result in unnecessary delays and on occasion even misunderstandings.

Given the inevitability of these two professions of having to work together, I think a forum such as this, provides an excellent opportunity of building professional understanding and bridges and possibly even evolving into a Medico-legal discussion/sharing forum where professional colleagues could learn from each other's experiences.  If this is a view/experience shared by other professional colleagues, then I wonder whether it may actually be worth considering creating another forum specifically for medico-legal colleagues.

I agree with you entirely.

I agree with you entirely. This forum exists for that very purpose.

I can add a new forum dedicated to medico-legal matters when the demand is there.

At the moment the professional take up on this site has been disappointing. I think that many of the lawyers whom I have approached are intrinsically conservative and cannot see the benefits of modern technology.

Having said that be assured that I will continue to promote the site to my utmost.

I will probably now concentrate my efforts on a younger audience who have a better vision of the future.

In the meantime I have authorised you as a professional user. You can post therefore in that section.

Profile: I joined Sarginsons from university as an articled clerk in 1970. I am now the managing partner and have wide experience in all aspects of the law normally dealt with in private practice. I believe that a modern high street practice must adapt to the hefty demands of clients and deliver it's services according to the clients wishes.

Thank you very much Ian.  I

Thank you very much Ian.  I will take this opportunity to post my original comments on the professional forum as well, to specifically draw it to the attention of professional colleagues.

It will be interesting to note the response.

Profile: I am a Consultant Psychiatrist who has been in NHS and Private practice for the last 30 years. I have been based in Staffordshire for the last 22 years. During my working life I have 'shared' clients with solicitor colleagues on numerous occasions and provided medico-legal psychiatric reports for solicitors, courts, Probation Officers and Tribunals. My interest in this forum arises from my very close working relationships with solicitors over the years. I believe much can be done through forums such as this, to improve and facilitate a greater understanding and closer working relationships between the two professions.

I think the idea of a medico

I think the idea of a medico legal forum is a splendid one. Often ,whilst apparently trying to serve a similar purpose, medical and legal professionals have a very different approach to medico legal questions .

A greater understanding of the needs, aims and limitations of each profession can only foster an enviroment in which medicolegal professionals can work far more easily to the  common goal of serving the patient/client.

Many Solicitors both young and old find networking difficult. The forum is the ideal way of breaking down the barriers. The very best medicolegal work comes from mutual trust and understanding. I am all for anything which promotes the same
