The future of legal aid

Am I the only one who thinks that within 5 years or so there won`t be any Solicitos able to afford to be doing legally aided defence work?  I can`t see B.V.T. is any way forward at all, and as for means testing in the Crown Court....

I notice that the LSC will

I notice that the LSC will soon allow franchised firms to opt for either Lexcel or Specialist Quality Mark for quality standard purposes.

This will relieve the burden (and expense) of using their own staff to carry out contract compliance audits as firms will have to pay for Lexcel auditors. Indeed, now that we pay our own bills from the monthly payments, and have peer reviews to check the quality of the legal advice, the LSC must be making huge savings on overheads.  Perhaps they could increase the rates solicitors are paid at last!

Profile: Having worked for Sarginsons as a practice manager since July 2000 I became a member of the partnership when the practice converted to an LDP on 1st April 2009, now Sarginsons Law LLP. Prior to this I have worked in private practice firms for approximately 25 years save for 4 years when I was employed as a software support analyst for a specialist software supplier to the legal profession.
