BP and the US government

THe oil industry must be worth trillions of dollars and therefore able to employ the brightest engineers and the best technical experts in the world.

Why then when there is a burst pipe the best solution BP can come up with is the so-called "top kill" ?- let's chuck a load of old rubbish in the hole and hopefully that will block it.

I could have come up with that answer for a fraction of the price BP are paying - indeed any 5 year old messing about with water would have said the same.

But what of the US government's response?

Of course BP should pay for it's mistakes. Why though is this logic not applied to the banks who have been bailed out of their mistakes by taxpayers money while their executives continue to draw million dollar bonuses? No retribution there, yet we all suffer.

Where was the hand-wringing angst and demands for compensation by the US government after a US company Union Carbide destroyed Bhopal in 1984?

One word - hypocrisy
